How to Use the Power of the Mind to Achieve Seemingly Impossible Goals

Achieving goals is often associated with dedication and willpower but all the resolve in the world won’t help if you don’t have the power of the mind on your side. Operating from determination alone explains why many of us fail to meet our goals, and why a mere 8% of New Year’s resolutions are met. If you’re sick of trying and failing, and ready to succeed, then this comprehensive 5-step guide is for you!

Step #1: Set Your Goals

Choose up to 3 major goals that you would like to obtain. Don’t choose more than 3 because if you set too many, you will get overwhelmed and likely bounce from goal-to-goal without actualizing any of them. If there is a large number of goals that come to mind, ask yourself – “What has to happen for me to feel happy, healthy and prosperous?” Think about how achieving each of those goals will make you feel, and how they will individually effect your life. Choose the 3 that feel the most vital and urgent (hint: they will often be the goals you’ve spent the most time thinking about over the past few months or years). Don’t discard the remaining goals, simply write them down and keep them for the future.

Step #2: Break the Goals Down

Setting life goals is intimidating, and for most people, serious doubt as to their attainability sets in shortly after setting them. This is why people quit and why people spend their entire lives setting and forgetting their goals. The best way to eliminate the fear of unattainability and failure is to break your goals down into multiple steps. Ask yourself what has to happen in order to achieve the goal. Then make a complete list of all the necessary steps, and vow to take it one step at a time. You may even want to create a 30-day list of what you will do each day to achieve each step. Alternatively, spend 10 minutes every morning in quiet contemplation and ask yourself “What am I going to do today that’s going to contribute to the current step?”

Step #3: Imagine Yourself Having Already Achieved The Goal

Your imagination is a powerful creator, and you should spend time everyday imagining yourself having already achieved the goal. In order to do this, ask yourself: How will it feel? How will you talk? How will you interact with others? What will you do differently? And perhaps most importantly, what will your self-talk be like when the goal is met? You should also visualize what it will look like when you achieve your goal. So for instance, if you want to lose weight, post a picture of yourself at your ideal body weight, or if you have never been your ideal bodyweight, post a photo of someone else who is in the shape you would like to be in (be realistic here and choose a photo of a body-type similar to yours). Create a vision board with images that represent the 1-3 goals that you are working on, and place it somewhere where you will see it often.

Step #4: Affirm Your Goals

Write your goals down, and read them to yourself every night before you go to bed, and every morning when you wake-up. When you verbalize your goals, say them with emphasis and passion. Throughout the day, you can repeat these goals in your head, and be sure to also repeat the words you will say to yourself when you reach those goals. So instead of saying to yourself: “I’m a failure,” “I’m fat,” “I don’t want to get out of bed,” or “I feel crummy;” say: “I’m a success,” “I love my body,” “I can’t wait to start my day,” or “I feel incredible.”

Step #5: Believe In and Feel The Success

Be confident that you’re going to do what you say you’re going to do. Convince yourself that it is your truth. Commit yourself 100% to taking all the necessary steps, and not stopping until the goal is achieved. Each time you waiver, you weaken your resolve, so don’t even entertain the possibility. Know that you are in charge, and dispel all inclinations of doubt. Your actions will follow your beliefs, so commit yourself to believing that your goals are imminent!
